TIGERWOOD

Call us Now

Known for its dark vein stripes with a captivating deep reddish-orange background, Tigerwood is an immensely durable and strong wood species that is also known by a variety of exotic names such as Congo Wood, Zorrowood, Muiracatiara, and many others.

With an impressive Janka rating of up to 2160 depending on the region it is grown, Tigerwood is an impressively robust and dense hardwood species like Ipe. As this species is 67% harder than Red Oak, Tigerwood’s density is pretty impressive when compared to almost any other wood. And it never hurts that this hardwood species carries components that make it naturally resistant to rot and decay while also not attracting mold or fungus growth. Tigerwood is immensely popular for a wide range of projects like:
Building a deck | Flooring | Furniture | Siding | Interior Design Applications | Stair Risers

Largest Tigerwood in-stock availability in Houston

At Lumber Plus, we keep an extensive, unmatched inventory of Tigerwood because it’s one of our clients’ all-time favorites. This means you can find pretty much any profile you need of Tigerwood for all common lengths. And if you need anything different than we already don’t stock, it’s never a problem: we can have it custom milled for any kind of project, big or small. So, make sure to call one of our sales representatives to find out more about what we have ready to be delivered to your job site and learn more about what we can do to help you nail your job.

Pro tips for working with Tigerwood

Although Tigerwood is durable, it is still surprisingly easy to work with when properly equipped with professional tools. As carbide is more durable, it is usually recommended to use carbide tips or bits for cutting Tigerwood. Standard tools will wear out faster when used on Tigerwood than they would on other hardwoods such as Ipe or Jatoba. It’s essential to predrill before using any screws or nails on this species. Because this hardwood can be challenging to sand, it’s recommended to prepare carefully before undertaking large-scale projects such as flooring. As with most of our species, Tigerwood is surprisingly cheap and easy to use as it responds well to air-drying. But it’s still important to know that warping and checking can occur under extreme conditions. Luckily, though, it is incredibly resistant to shrinkage and movement after the wood has dried.

CUMARU WOOD

Call us Now

Cumaru is a hardwood that originated in northern South America and is popularly known by its nickname “Brazilian Teak.” This wood has a beautiful deep red or maroon color which eventually fades to a captivating silver hue. These features make Cumaru wood perfect for Decking and Siding.

Unlike other woods such as Red Oak or Teak, Cumaru is not an expensive wood, and it is surprisingly much more robust than both. Cumaru’s Janka hardness is around seven times greater than redwood or cedar. When compared to other hardwoods, Cumaru will only lose its position in strength and durability to Ipe, making it a very cost-effective wood to be used for a wide variety of projects, such as:
Decking | Docks | Gazebos | Exterior Wood Siding | Pergolas | Fencing

We have more Cumaru in stock than anyone in Houston

At Lumber Plus, we take our “largest hardwood inventory” claim very seriously. That means we stock more Cumaru than anyone else in the Houston area in order to fulfill our client’s needs. So, no matter what kind of job you’re working on, we probably have what you need to get you started. And if by any chance, we don’t have the profile or length you’re looking for, we won’t leave you hanging. We can custom mill for your project and place special orders at any time. Give us a call to learn more about what we have ready to be delivered to your job site and learn more about what we can do to help you nail your job.

Pro tips for working with Cumaru

As Cumaru has the second highest Janka hardness factor, losing only to Ipe, you can imagine it can be a challenging decking material to be installed. So, it’s crucial to know that no nails or screws should be used as this hardwood species must be predrilled.

Every time you cut a Cumaru board, you must seal the end with an end sealant. And like Ipe hardwood, this species needs to be UV treated for the first four years. Upon completion, you must apply your first coat of sealer and let the wood dry thoroughly before use.

Jatoba WOOD

Call us Now

Known as Brazilian Cherry, Jatoba hardwood comes from Mexico, Central America, and South America. Because it is a tropical hardwood, its robust strength and long-lasting durability is a couple of its many benefits. Its extreme hardness is well worth its price.

Before eventually darkening into a beautiful reddish-brown, Jatoba’s sapwood is initially white, gray, and even pinkish in some cases, while the heartwood is salmon-red when it is cut. Because this species has an interlocked grain, it’s the perfect hardwood for flooring. However, it can also be used for:
Moldings | Outdoor Furniture | Wooden Gears | Decking | Exterior Cladding

A Jatoba Stock So Massive It’ll Make Your Head Spin

Here at Lumber Plus, we take immense pride in our massive inventory. So proud that we’re not afraid to call it the biggest hardwood inventory in all North America. This means that we have the largest stock of Jatoba in all of Houston. Whether your project is big or small, we have what it takes to get the job done. And in the rare case that we don’t have what you’re looking for, we can custom mill anything you need to ensure that you have what you need to build the deck you’ve been dreaming of.

Pro Tips Working With Jatoba

Jatoba wood can be challenging to work with, just as with other hardwoods. But with the appropriate tools and implements, these challenges can easily be solved. It’s essential to consider the species’ hardness and consider the dulling of tools.

Because of moderate difficulty, working with Jatoba is often compared to Red Oak. But not everything about this species is difficult to work with. Jatoba glues, stains, and even finishes astonishingly nicely, resulting in an awe-inspiring final result. Most people prefer to polish this species to achieve a beautiful and mesmerizing luster. While it’s easy to get lost in all these tips, the one thing you must take away is that screwing is highly recommended over nailing because of Jatoba’s immense density.
